How do you learn to make freehand drawing and what does it mean?
Freehand drawing means putting marks on a flat surface, more or less smooth, with the aid of a tool. Often the instrument in question is a pencil, but you can draw through pens, brushes, pastels or charcoal. Ab antiquo hand-draw was critical and the design was considered “the foundation of art”, that was developed through: geometry, perspective, anatomy, architecture, the study of light and color. Over the years the contour line gave way to color, to become an expression of the way the artist sees the world and not the simple and rigorous demonstration of reality “as it is”. Therefore, taking cue from this historical and hermeneutical evidence, you must exercise yourself to acquire skills and familiarity with drawing. Is this enough or should you give free rein to your bubbly creativity from the outset? The correct answer, in my humble opinion, can’t be apart from the technical side. Also, in my opinion, it’s all about learning to reconcile the boarding creativity of the childlike age with rigorous academic courses that are taught by adolescence onwards; however, the teachings that I have never had, being completely self-taught.
Here, then, we come at the focal point of this first article, that is the question that many of you have made, you make, or you still have to make:
Do you must attend a school, a high school or even a college of fine arts to learn how to draw freehand in order to have a bright future in that area so repudiated which is the arts sector?
No, absolutely not. Especially if freehand drawing makes you happy, if that is your passion, your ideal world; in short, something that, as yours, is virtually inaccessible to others. In this case, then, it can make up to school education. In fact keep practicing is the best way to get a grasp to allow the artist to bring their thoughts on paper. That being said, it is useful to make a clarification so the reader does not have an incentive to misrepresent the content of what was previously argued: school education, likely to find a viable compensation in practice, remains, for those who can (and thus, students, I recommend you not to miss the opportunity to exploit it properly), the privileged way for the aspiring artist; allowing the exercise under the supervision of an expert able to correct mistakes, granting a safer, profitable and faster artistic and intellectual maturity.
At this point of the paragraph another important reflection on a theme dear to me is essential, the concept of brain plasticity (or neuroplasticity). This term is intended to indicate the ability of the brain to change during the life of an individual for the good or even, sometimes, for worse. Without going deeply into matters too complex to be explained in this location and completely divorced from the art world, it is enough to know that physical changes occurring in our brain manifest themselves later as changes in our abilities. That, without fear of contradiction, reveals an element too often underestimated or not accepted by the common thought: practice and exercise are far more important than so called “natural talent”. The predestined genius does not exist-Hegel said-there are only dedication and commitment. Thus becomes easy to understand the miraculous assumption (as well as common place) according to which the talent, in fact, handed down for years from father to son, or is, however, innate, artificially restricting access to the artistic practice, which has become consequently a sort of pantheon of “chosen ones.” Science and history have proven the obsolescence and inadequacy of this theory: draw appears to be a learnable skill just like any other! Sure, there will be people who have a more natural inclination towards certain disciplines than others, in which they will tend to be less skilled, but the good news is that anyone can learn to draw freehand.
How do you learn to draw freehand? I couldn’t definitely close an article without answering one of the two main questions which I opened it with, and here comes the fun. First, as long as there are endless ways and techniques to draw, so I chose the focus will be on realistic drawing. I decided to start this blog to give anybody who wish, the chance to read in a clear and concise way what I learned over the years, maybe avoiding mistakes-as back in time happened to the undersigned-that can cause loss of precious time and also turning off desire and passion. While you can learn from your mistakes, it is equally true that no mistake at all (for instance by offering the possibilities and “places” of errors and, in doing so, avoiding them) is much better, as somebody who realized the defaillance at the end of a drawing, irreparably compromising the end result, knows. Let’s start with the choice of art supplies, which I personally consider one of the most important things ever for the realization of a good work, up to the technical implementation. It will be a path, journey, during which, step by step, I will take you to improve gradually, while maintaining your style and artistic personality.
